Ian comes from an agricultural economics background having worked for NSW Agriculture for 12 years before completing a PhD in 2000. He joined the IRF in October 2003 as a Research Fellow and Project Director with over 20 years experience as a Resource Economist and Team Leader in Australia and developing countries (Indonesia, East Timor, Thailand, Laos, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and the Philippines). His research areas include:

• The sustainable development of institutions and community in rural development, agribusiness and smallholder relationships in developing countries, project management and evaluation,

• The role of social capital in linking smallholders to agribusiness opportunities in developing countries (particularly Indonesia),

• Livestock marketing chains in Australia and Indonesia,

• The role of the community and economic incentives to minimise the spread of livestock diseases,

• The development and use of market-based instruments (MBIs) to improve the sustainability of rural and regional production systems,

He has recently completed a Post-Doctoral fellowship in the area of agro-industry waste re-use.
Ian has undertaken many research projects and consultancies funded in Australia by NSW DEC (EPA), Environmental Trust, CMA (Border Rivers-Gwydir) and Moree Plains Council and internationally through AusAid, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and the World Bank.
