Professor Donnermeyer received his PhD and MA degrees in Sociology from the University of Kentucky, and a BA degree in Sociology from Thomas More College. He has been a member of the Rural Sociology Program at The Ohio State University since 1979, and currently serves as Program Area Leader of Rural Sociology and Director of Rural Sociology Graduate Programs. His main focus of research is the examination of issues related to crime and delinquency among rural populations, including substance use and other risk-taking behaviours of rural youth. A second research interest is the experiences of police officers who work in community-based police initiatives, such as the School Resource Officer Program, Neighbourhood Watch, and Community-Oriented Policing. Professor Donnermeyer conducts training programs on leadership within community settings and how to organise and work with community leaders. He is a regular instructor in the Police Executive Leadership College and the Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, the John Glenn Institute for Public Policy and Service at The Ohio State University, and the Executive Management Program of Northwestern University.

Professor Donnermeyer is Director and International Research Coordinator of the Centre for Rural Crime.
