Dr Bassett is a conservation biologist and geographic information systems specialist with over 10 years experience in using computers to address spatial natural resource issues. Utilizing algorithm optimization techniques to locate conservation reserves (the subject of his graduate work) he has addressed how aesthetics and vertebrate diversity interact to add value to a conservation network. He has applied geographic information science to a host of land use concerns in various locations around the world. He has been an active participant within the Gap Analysis program for the states of Utah and Nevada. Recently, he developed spatial models to address how various land use decisions impact the natural resources within the Upper San Pedro River Watershed, Arizona USA. and Sonora Mexico. He is currently managing the spatial aspects of an investigation about biodiversity in Southern California where the overall goal is to assess how future urban sprawl will impact the natural resources in the region. Dr Bassett is currently working with Professor David Brunckhorst and Karl Bock on ‘Understanding Alternative Landscape Design Options for Planning more Sustainable Regions’ project.
