International Journal of Rural Crime

An International, Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Crime, Safety and Security in Rural Communities

The Centre for Rural Crime is an International Research Centre located within the Institute for Rural Futures at the University of New England Armidale, New South Wales, Australia.

International Journal of Rural Crime

The Centre publishes the International Journal of Rural Crime, in conjunction with Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio (USA).

The 2007 edition of the journal has been published online.

The Objectives

The focus of the Centre’s research is crime and other risks to the safety and security of rural communities. The Centre seeks to unite researchers, groups, practitioners and other end-users across Australia and internationally who have an interest in this topic. The goal is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange of concepts, ideas and knowledge leading to the development of novel research, new synergies, and highly innovative applied solutions for improving the social condition of rural communities, and for contributing towards the disciplines of Criminology and Rural Sociology.

The specific objectives of the Centre are to:

• Build a research network of local, national and international multi-disciplinary expertise in the pursuit of the Centre’s endeavours,

• Provide a focal point for multi-disciplinary research in the areas of rural crime, safety and security and associated social issues,

• Document the challenges faced by rural communities in ensuring safety,

• Develop strategies for modifying crime prevention programs to "fit" rural communities,

• Contribute towards the disciplines of criminology and rural sociology,

• Develop strategies to support young researchers and research students in the field.
