The Institute for Rural Futures
The Institute for Rural Futures is an independent research centre located on campus at the University of New England. The Institute provides socio-economic survey research and statistical analysis services tailored to the specific needs of public and private sector clients.
The focus of Institute research is on understanding pressures of change, both positive and negative, on social, economic and ecological systems as a whole. It is only through understanding the processes and impacts of change that rural and regional communities, along with government, can plan for the future.
These complex systems are inseparably entwined. Interactions of social-ecological systems create positive and negative pressures on landscapes, communities and economies. The effects create or limit future options for policy and action, in society's necessary transition towards sustainable futures. This area of applied trans-disciplinary research is known as sustainability science.
The Institute incorporates the UNESCO Centre for Bioregional Resource Management, and the Centre for Rural Crime (publisher of the International Journal of Rural Crime).
